Red, Blue and Green - the Global Team

- network of Diversity Icebreaker / Trialogue consultants

Joy Buikema Fjærtoft

Organizational Psychologist, employed at Oslo University Hospitals.

I also work freelance and have my own company Psychology at Work.

DI / Trialogue experience: I have been using DI since 2000 when I started working as a consultant in Human Factors, and was impressed by how fun and effective it was! Since 2006 I have used DI in my own company, in leadership and talent development programs, to increase the participants’ insight into their own preferences and styles. Equally important, I have used DI to improve communication and collaboration in teams and departments, and thus improve performance, in a wide range of industries, public and private. At present, I am using DI in a culture program at Oslo University Hospitals, to promote a culture characterized by openness and respect (very important for patient safety and quality), across professions, nationalities and personal preferences. In this work I am also in charge of a facilitator program, and find DI a perfect tool for internal facilitators.

Background education: Certified psychologist, University of Oslo. I also have a B.A. in English from St Olaf College in the U.S., and am still very interested in the language aspects of communication. I have also studied in Germany, East and West (this is a while back!) Specialization: Work and organizational psychology. Some 20+ years of experience, both as an internal consultant in large organizations, and as an external consultant for small and medium-sized businesses, large international corporations, all levels of the public sector, and for NGO’s.

Key competencies:

  • Organizational, leadership, talent and team development.
  • Organizational culture is my special interest and area of expertise, ever since my dissertation.
  • My cross-cultural background gives me unique experience and a special interest for working with cross-cultural issues and diversity.
  • Other areas of competence: Creativity, stress management and work engagement, burnout, change management, Scandinavian work model, dialogue, emotional intelligence.

Languages: English: native language. Norwegian: professionally fluent, oral and written. German: good working knowledge, after living 4 years in Germany.

An interesting story you have about your DI / Trialogue application:
I have an incredible number of interesting stories of how DI has helped my clients (and me), but I will share the one I retell the most, and the story that was first:

Once upon a time….When I started in Human Factors “Red-Blue- and Green” – as it was called before being ingeniously renamed “Diversity Icebreaker”- was a free tool we used in seminars. After having experienced how useful, solid, fun, and popular it was, I said it should be marketed more broadly, and why not be a little more business-minded, and charge for it? I only regret I didn’t ask for shares for this advice! 😉 But still, happy ending!
